Self-Absorbed

I’m caught in a place

Deep and dark inside

Nowhere to go

Nowhere to hide

Alone and conflicted

Lines on my face

A fractured awareness

It’s not a good place

Self-absorbed

I cannot see

Beyond the self

Beyond my own need

I’m self-absorbed

Don’t count on me

Can’t free myself

Wouldn’t you agree

My friends try and tell me

You don’t step on hollowed ground

Another judgement played

Another judgement found

Don’t walk thru this life

And disregard the rest

When we see all as part of one

We see all are put to the test

Self-absorbed

I cannot see

Beyond the self

Beyond my need

I’m self-absorbed

Don’t count on me

Can’t free myself

wouldn’t you agree

Pay attention of those around us

Even the blind man sees

Another man’s misfortune

Another man’s pleas

We all seek belonging

We all share this creed

So why do we stray away?

Why do we indeed?

I’ve lived my Life

I ‘ve lived my life

To make my purpose clear

I question everything

What matters in our heart is dear

– the skeptic

I’ve lived my life

To make my purpose clear

self-gratification

I grandize

What matters is how I look in the mirror

– the narcissist

I’ve lived my life

To make my purpose known

I love to give from my heart

Love must be taught

Love must be shown

– the spiritual leader

I’ve lived my life

If truth be told

My purpose is to persuade others

my doctrine is pure

My doctrine is bold

– the zealot

I’ve lived my life

In a purposeful way

I work, I eat, I help when needed

And sometimes I play

The family is important

And to this I must admit

A common person’s riddle

A common life that will fit

– an everyday person

The Captive Son

The soldier tells his story

With a contradiction of terms

Son as a captive audience

Becomes confused as he learns

It’s important to share with others

What we think will count the most

But we may often lose focus

When we let our egos stand the post

The stories that we tell

Many are fictions in our mind

And the more that we tell them

Are we not honest?

Are we not blind?

A young man pursues his fortunes

For an unknown cost to be paid

The ideals of our youth

Often tested many times before they fade

In the middle years we find ourselves not knowing

What will be our destiny

The trials and tribulations

Work themselves out so candidly

In the twilight

Our days are numbered

Many revise the way they live

Tis not fortune

Tis not destiny

Tis only what the heart can give
